- First Multifamily Project
The firm lands its first major multifamily residential project - Woodside, a 750-unit apartment community in Sacramento.
- Partnership Formed
Jim Babcock becomes a partner, and the company is now known as Donald Sandy Jr. AIA, James A. Babcock.
- Growth in California
The firm becomes a go-to firm for multifamily residential design in California.
- Ocean House
Ocean House - an iconic beachfront property in Monterey, California - is featured in Architectural Record.
- Key Colony
Key Colony– a huge project on Key Biscayne – establishes the firm as a presence in Florida, and the firm’s Miami office is born.
- A New Home
Don and Jim establish a new home for the San Francisco office, retrofitting an old body-shop into an architectural office in a much-publicized re-use of urban space.
- Fisher Island
The first residences are completed at Fisher Island, off the coast of Miami – a multiple-award winning resort community that remains the firm’s longest running project.
- Kiawah Island
Kiawah Island, an award-winning project in South Carolina, sets the bar for sustainable coastal design.
- John Eller
John Eller, who joined the firm in 1977as a junior draftsman, is named Chief Executive Officer.
- International Expansion
Sandy & Babcock expands into Asia and the Caribbean, forging an international practice.
- First 5-Star Hotel
The firm’s first 5-star hotel, Anassa in Cyprus, opens its doors - Conde Naste calls one of the world’s ten best new hotels.
Apple releases the first iPod.
- A New Name
The firm becomes SB Architects.
- Santana Row
Santana Row - lauded as an industry-leading urban mixed-use project - opens in San Jose, California.
- New Headquarters
SB Architects moves its headquarters to larger quarters on the San Francisco waterfront.
- Calistoga Ranch
Calistoga Ranch, an Auberge Resort opens and appears on the cover of Travel & Leisure.
- 1060 Brickell
The 1060 Brickell towers are completed, forever making their mark on the Miami Skyline.
- China Office
The firm opens its China office in Shenzhen.

Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve opens to rave reviews
