Yesterday, Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants introduced its first new-build resort on Grand Cayman, in the Cayman Islands, officially beginning the one-year countdown to the opening of the resort in November 2016. Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, and resort developer DART Realty Cayman Ltd., chose SB Architects to envision Kimpton’s first resort and first property outside the United States.
Seafire Resort + Spa is the first new development on Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach in over a decade. The project, which broke ground in 2012, celebrated the topping off of the main hotel building in September. The design for this new resort is the result of a close, collaborative effort between Kimpton, DART, SB Architects and landscape architects EDSA. The resort design team worked to express through the architecture and landscape Kimpton’s signature playful, yet sophisticated approach to luxury, creating in the process a distinctive property that sets the bar for future development on Grand Cayman.
Set on a narrow site between the bay and the sea, this resort offered the opportunity to create a resort design in direct response to its unique setting. As Kimpton Hotel’s first dedicated resort property, it also offered the opportunity to design a destination that reflects the playful spirit and welcoming atmosphere of the hotel brand. The contemporary architecture speaks to today’s traveler. From the moment of arrival, the landscape – inspired by the flow of water and natural island breezes – draws the visitor through the site. The distinctive design of Seafire Resort + Spa sets the balconies along the long wing of the hotel at an angle to maximize water views and capture the sea breezes. Every one of the myriad details of the design was chosen to reflect the distinct personality and individual character of the new resort.
